The forever knife

Not done a blog post for a while but life has been manic lately.

Anyway a curious knife came into Barras Blades from a local business. Hidden in a box of knifes which probably averaged abut £30 to buy was a strange blue handled oddity. It had a strange looking handle but it had a very nice weight. Putting it through the normal sharpening process it produced alot of sparks on the belt grinder. This is a sign of a high carbon blade which while brittle you can get an excellent edge.

Over all I was very impressed with the knife and inevitably the wife wanted one. So spoke to the customer and they pointed me to where they got it from.

The knife comes from a small producer called allday knives who have a ethos which i can very much agree with.

We believe a good knife is the basis of all good cooking. It’s the most important tool a cook can buy.

But buying cheap knives isn’t sustainable - they soon become blunt and in need of replacing.

We’re on a mission to make quality knives that last a lifetime. That’s why our blades are handmade by a Japanese family in Sakai who have been forging knives for over four generations.

To combat plastic waste in the industry, we make our knife handles from plastic that would be heading to landfill.

It takes a while to create a knife that lasts for life, so we release our knives in limited batches every three months

I got in touch with them via there instagram account and they kindly shared my content

This led to another one of there knifes being sent to me for a minor chip repair

And a quick play with the slo-mo function of the wife’s phone

So what are my thoughts on the allday forever knife?

They are excellent and with care and attention it is easily a knife that you can hand down to your children.

It very much fits into one of the central core of my own thoughts of to buy stuff that will last a lifetime instead of garbage which will end up in the dustbin after a few years or less.

I think that barras blades can help the environment by rescuing tools from the past which have plenty of life left in them

For example this set of scissors that i rescued

Barras blades is part of a old way of doing things where instead of binning things they can be reused and kept for years

So if you want some stuff rescued then get in touch
